In order to create an idiomatic national style, the Norwegian composers of the end of the 19th century were searching for inspiration in the rich folk music of their land. Among them are Johan Svendsen and Edvard Grieg, who both arranged the same melody in the two works to be heard in this program.
Lesser known are the composers Halfdan Kjerulf and Christian Sinding, the latter having been more influenced by the German music of his time.
Edvard Grieg, Symphonic Dances op.64
Halfdan Kjerulf, Grosse Polonaise C-dur op.13
Christian Sinding, Suite for piano duet op.35
Johan Svendsen, Norwegian Rhapsody No.2 op.19
